Are there ever times, when you come across something and just think WOW, what a great idea? My Father-in-law has a great eye for transforming everyday things into something more useful. Lately, he has been working on organizing his garage and purchased some new cabinets with doors to keep everything covered up and clean! So he removed the old shelving racks out of the garage. Instead of throwing away or selling the shelves he came up with the idea of transforming the shelving unit into a Tool Storage Unit.
My Father-in-law used to place all his tools along the side of the garage and hung a few on the wall, but occasionally or maybe a little more often when he walked by or a guest one of the tools would get knock over. Several time it even created the domino effect knocking a few over. So naturally, a storage unit would be great to place to keep the tools tidy and away from being knock over.
The transformation of the Shelves turned Tool Storage Unit was rather simply. My Father-in-law removed all the shelves leaving just the shell of the shelving unit. He then placed, medal peg board strip, around the top inside of the unit and along the inside of the side of the unit.
Most tools you purchase have holes in the handle for hanging, but if yours do not, not a problem, you can drill a hole in the handle or simply lean the tool in the storage unit. The storage unit has three sides so it is likely that it will not fall out of the unit.
To maximize the space don’t be afraid to double up tools or items on one hook. I didn’t get a great picture (sorry), but metal hooks and s-hooks were also place on the middle level of the shelving unit where the middle shelves used to rest to place heavier items like chain and shorter items.
Here is a full picture of the Shelves turn Tool Storage Unit! The area of My-Father-In-Laws yards that once could be deemed as unsafe for you to walk by is now organized in one solid unit, creating safety and also pleasing to the eye. What a fantastic transformation!
